Burn Injury Overview

Burns are categorized based upon the level of severity and the layers of skin that are damaged. The most severe burn injuries are third degree burns.

  • First degree burns: 1st degree burns cause minor damage, such as redness to the top layer of skin which replenishes itself in a matter of days.
  • Second degree burns: 2nd degree burns are more serious burns and involve damage to multiple layers of skin, including blisters and openings.
  • Third degree burns: 3rd degree burns are the most serious of burn injuries.
